In doing so, I will analyze some of the historical perspectives on gestures to get to the latest theories in this field with the hope of answering some seemingly banal but actually vital questions about the role of gesture in acting and performance: what do we mean when we say an actor is also a good mover and how does “good” movement or gestures serve this art? What are the best-known training techniques that used gestures and movement to improve acting? Considered as a body movement most often voluntarily controlled by the actor, the gesture is performed in order to produce a meaning that is not necessarily dependent on the spoken text.
